The first of two cartoons by Ray Zell to commemorate some of the many mine disasters that have taken the lives of thousands of miners - the Fairmont Coal Co. mine disaster in 1907. Congress reacted to the tragedy by passing and toughening mine safety laws and, three years later, by establishing the Bureau of Mines.
